If you have a business fleet, there are certain things that you need to do in order to keep it safe. The drivers and the vehicles themselves need to be as safe as possible all the time, and there are a number of things that you should do to make sure that this is the case. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you should be doing in order to keep your fleet safe. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more about this topic.
Coach Your Drivers
The first thing that you are going to need to do is coach your drivers. Of course, you wouldn’t hire them if they weren’t qualified, but this doesn’t mean that there is nothing more that they can learn. Ensure that all of your drivers are up to the same standard of driving so that you know everyone is safe out there. As such, make sure that you are giving them courses regularly to ensure that they are all still driving as safely as possible.
If a driver appears to be lacking when it comes to something like this, it’s important to give them extra help. If after a while they still aren’t getting it, you need to think about letting them go. You can’t allow someone to work for your business if they are not going to do so safely. The same goes for every business, but it’s especially important when your business involves other people and the road.
Keep Up With Maintenance
Another thing that you are going to need to think about is keeping up with the maintenance of your vehicles to keep them safe. If you have a vehicle that is damaged in some way, this is extremely dangerous. For example, if there is something wrong with the tyres, this means that the vehicle is not safe to drive. As such, the person driving that vehicle usually would either need to be moved into a different one or wait until it is fixed. Ideally, you should always have spare truck tyres around so that if it’s an issue here, this won’t be too much of a problem.
There are, of course, other things that could go wrong when it comes to your fleet. Make sure that you are keeping up with the maintenance, noticing things when they are not a big issue so that they can be fixed before they become one.
Make A Fleet Inspection Team
You should always have a fleet inspection team if you have a fleet. This team are responsible for checking the vehicles when they come back at the end of a shift. They need to go through everything about the vehicle to ensure that it is safe again to drive the next shift. If something is wrong, they need to report it to someone who has the authority to get the vehicle fixed as soon as possible. With a fleet inspection team, you need people who are qualified when it comes to looking at the specific type of vehicle that you have ideally. They know what they are looking for, and they will spot issues easily, so you can trust what they say.
If you hire someone who isn’t really experienced, there’s a chance that they are going to miss things. We’re all human at the end of the day, but the fewer mistakes that can be made, the better.
Require Regular Driver Reports
Ideally, you should require your drivers to provide you with a report of their driving at the end of each week or so. They should ensure that they are keeping notes when they are driving so that they can report back to you. This will help you understand if anything ever goes wrong, as you may be able to see a lead up in the reports. For example, if one of your drivers says that the truck felt like it was leaning a little, this is something that you can look into. It might not even be that there is something wrong per se, but it could just be something they have noticed when they were driving. It’s always worth checking out, so keep that in mind.
Insure ALL Your Vehicles
You need to make sure that all of your vehicles in the fleet have insurance. There are a number of reasons for this, the biggest one being that it’s illegal to drive without insurance. The second is that if someone gets into an accident, you are covered. You want to have this peace of mind when you have a number of vehicles out there, otherwise, that could be very bad for you if something did happen.
You can look at different insurance companies to see who can provide you with the best possible price for the best policy. Fleet insurance is understandably a little different, and a little more expensive than your regular car insurance. It depends on what type of vehicle you have as well, so keep all of these things in mind when you are choosing insurance. We know that it might seem like a huge cost all at once, but the last thing that you want is to be operating on the wrong side of the law just for a little bit of cash. Safety has got to be the main priority here, so make sure that it is, no matter what it is going to cost you on an annual basis.
