3 across the back seat

Welcome to what I hope will be a useful guide for anyone looking to find cars which will let you put “3 across” in the backseat.

By that we of course mean car seats. If you are like me and have 3 children or maybe you have more children – getting them all in the car can be a challenge! What could complicate this is when you are struggling to install 3 car seats in the car…oh dear! So as a helpful guide I am here going to list those cars for which my research has proven will let you install three car seats across in the back seat.

The list is alphabetical and this guide will be in 2 parts to try to not keep it too long! Photos of the installs if they were available – and all photos which have kids in them will have been pre-approved and sent to me by the parent – so I haven’t put anything here that wasn’t already cleared.

I hope this helps you in your car search!

  • Q5
Tried a TWE, Axkid Minikid & Cybex Sirona. Tight fit but works. In fact if the Cybex was taken out, you’d easily fit another Axkid or a Radian type of seat in it.
  • Q7
    Isofix across 2nd row.
  • A4 Avant
Isofix across 2nd row & front seat. Passenger airbag turns off.
Audi Q5 (2015). Britax TWE, Axkid Minikid and a Cybex Sirona on the far side.

  •  2 Series Gran Tourer
The second row of seats in the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is approved for transporting three child seats, positioned directly next to each other. The two outer seats also feature ISOFIX child safety seat fasteners, which are concealed under flaps.
  • 3 Series Touring
Easily 3 across. Isofix across 2nd row & front seat. Top tethers. Passenger airbag turns off.
  • 5 Series Estate
We got Maxi Cosi Cabriofix & Easyfix base, Britax Eclipse in the Middle (will work with a slim RF seat as well), and Britax Adventure high back booster. It was a squeeze, but we had no safety concerns when finished. The seat bucketing particularly at the doors makes it difficult in the BMW’s.

  • Berlingo
Tried 2 x Britax TWEs & 1 Diono Radian 5. Lots of room. Isofix across 2nd row. Top tether. Passenger airbag turns off.
  • C4 Picasso
  • Cactus
  • Grand Picasso
  • Xsara Picasso
  • C8
Is exactly the same as the Peugeot 807. Fitted 2 x Besafe Izi Plus and a Besafe Izi combi across the middle row.

Citroen cars can also turn off the passenger airbag and apart from the Xsara – they all have top tethers. Citroen also allows leg extension into the bottom compartment.

C4 Picasso (2009). Britax Advansafix, Maxi Cosi Mobi & Recaro HBB isofix. Good fit.

3- across in a Grand Picasso. G1 FF seat, infant seat in middle and a HBB on far right. You can also see the top tethers on all 3 vehicle seats.

  • ix 35
Maxi Cosi Pebble (no base) and Britax adventure high back booster on the outside seats with a Britax TWE rear facing in the middle. Also works with another Britax Adventure if you take the Pebble away. Unfortunately not big enough for an isofix base because the fitting points are quite in from the edge of the seats.

  •  Santa Fe
A fab car that fits 3 across the back seat very easily in any type of combo. And no bottom floor compartments!
Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai Santa Fe, 2008, with an Axkid Minikid, Britax Hi-Way II and a Britax Two Way Elite.

  • Carens
  • Sportage
3 across depending on your need for front seat space.

  1. This is great Therese. We have 3 seats across the back in our car a renault scenic and the struggle to find cara is real. We need a newer car soon so I will be popping back. We have 2 britax Evolvas and a britax first class in the middle currently. The first class was rf until last week on the side with a small high backed booster in the middle and one evolva.

  2. Thank you so much for such a useful post and pictures. I ended up purchasing a Citroen C4 Picasso after hours and hours searching online for how to fit three full sized seats across the back. There is not much info out there so I had to piece bits together here and there which was both confusing and conflicting. Your website would have been a massive help had it been available when I was looking! The only reason I stumbled across it is during my search for an extended rear facing seat for my baby (Picasso’s have stupid underfloor storage as do many large cars now and this hinders which seats you can have as well as having to factor in width and so on to fit next to the other car seats!). I currently have a combination of a BeSafe Izi Go (Stage 0+), Britax Adventure (HBB) and Graco Junior (HBB). When new seat arrives in a few days I’ll have switched BeSafe for Axkid Minikid. If you would like pictures of any of the combinations I have please let me know and I can email some in.

    • Hi Ellie!
Pictures are always welcome! It’s always good and useful to others to see the different combinations – so that would be great!

  3. Great idea- so useful! I really struggled with this when my third was born. We had just had 2 snowy winters the previous years and live in hilly Buckinhamshire, so wanted a 4×4 to manage icy, hilly roads. We went for a Landrover discovery in the end, expensive but well worth it for the space and safety aspect- feels like a tank and isn’t far off the size of one! Fitted 3 cars seats along the back seat easily and has 2 more full size seats that pop up in the boot where you can add additional car seats too. #KCACOLS

  4. This is definitely a super usual post for parents that have 3 kids. I only have 2 daughters so I won’t need this unless I have a 3rd kid but I don’t think this will happen at all! Unless it is an accident! lol. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. It is lovely to have you, x
